Ferret Vets
Ferret vets are very different from your “run-of-the-mill” dog and cat vet. They are uniquely trained to deal with the various illnesses that can afflict ferrets, and can recognize the symptoms of a sick ferret that other vets may not notice. Since they are such small animals with such high metabolisms, ferrets cannot wait for an otherwise unspecialized vet to figure out what may be wrong with them. Time and expertise can make a world of a difference for a ferret.

Dr. Erswell has been the veterinarian for the Ferret Rescue of Maine since 2003. She has helped countless ferrets in the shelter over the years providing medical, dental and surgical care. She owned ferrets for 22 years and has now been practicing as a ferret veterinarian for over 20. She sees ferret owners from all over the state. She prefers to help owners be proactive about the care for their ferrets by checking for insulinoma and adrenal issues starting at the age of 4. This allows us to avoid crisis and help manage the ferret’s health.

Dr. Caffrey is a great ferret vet, but is located a bit too far away for us to use full time.
He is a excellent surgeon, very knowledgeable about ferrets, and we would highly recommend him as a resource in the care of yours.
